Reality Labs is a research group within Meta AR that brings together a world-class team of researchers, developers, and engineers to build the future of connection within virtual and augmented reality. LiveMaps is a Reality Labs research effort that aims to bridge the gap between the physical world and digital universe using machine vision alongside localization and mapping technology. By creating a shared virtual map of our world, LiveMaps will enable a number of enriched AR experiences. And ultimately, radically change the way humans connect in the future. The Challenge—At best, innovative research feels overtly academic and hard to fully grasp. At worst, it brings feelings of dystopian dread. And Reality Labs knew this was something they were up against. Poised to make their research public, they needed a brand that could educate the public and attract new talent.

The Work
The Work
Our goal was to create a brand that let LiveMaps sit in the intersection of Academia and Approachability allowing them to garner trust and interest from research groups and the public alike. The approach was quite simple—focus on humans. It’s not about creating a digital copy of the world. It’s about bringing people closer together. It’s about empowering people to connect and share in deeper, more meaningful ways. Visually we wanted to create a dynamic system that felt energetic, bright, and refined. We delivered a comprehensive brand guide, educational imagery, and an interactive microsite. As Sr Brand Designer, I led the creation of the brand identity, brand language, and conceptual imagery. As Art Director, I worked closely with 3D artists to visualize a number of abstract concepts into visually appealing images that were easy to digest.
